Starting 2016 with a new adventure…

amanda photographic now based in Bend, Oregon serving western united states

My head is still spinning! We have officially been here for 11 days and it’s still sinking in that we’ve moved over the mountains to Central Oregon.

John and I fell in crazy love with the desert after our first motorcycle tour in 2014 where we traveled through 8 states, covering 3,700 miles in just 12 days. The Oregon high desert has had a special place in our hearts ever since we started spending long weekends at Hart Mountain (thanks Bob!). We knew that we wanted to live in Bend, we only needed the right opportunity to bring us out here. After a couple years of development, training, working, interviewing, and more development John was offered a position at Bend Research and I was ready to move my photography business to BOOMING Bend! So far we’re completely head over heels for the views, the food, the people, and all the activities that are readily available. …SNOW!!!!

Q: What’s John doing at Bend Research?

A: Science. lol… he’ll be doing basically the same thing he was doing in Corvallis, but for a company that really really really wants him. Today was his first day!

Q: Are you still going to photograph weddings in the Willamette Valley?

A: Yes! I already serve all of Oregon, Washington, Northern California, Idaho, Montana, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado; so this really doesn’t change anything (business wise) except where my address is and how far I have to drive to get to a venue. I still LOVE to work in new places and am happy to travel for your special day.

Q: Are your prices going to change? Will you come to Corvallis for a mini-session?

A: Yes, but they were going to anyway. Yes, they will be more organized and grouped into mini-session weekends.

Q: How will you talk with your clients and develop that good relationship that’s so important to you?

A: I already use skype or facetime a lot for clients that live out of town. I make every effort to meet with every couple in person at least once before their wedding rehearsal. I’ll probably even more strongly encourage engagement sessions so that I have a good excuse to travel to them.

Q: Are you scared about moving your business?

A: Yep! Big changes are naturally terrifying. But I’m soooooo ready for this. I’m excited to explore all the beautiful natural areas, parks, and venues. It also doesn’t hurt that one of my best gal pals – Abby of AE Creative – has lived in Bend (moved from Corvallis) for over a year now and her wedding planning, rentals, and stationary business is a-boomin’! She’s given me so much encouragement over the last several weeks leading up to the big move and immediately welcomed us both to Bend.

Q: Can I come visit?

A: Please do!!!

Anyway… I mostly just wanted to make this official announcement so that you all could be part of his HUGE new adventure. Get ready to see some crazy beautiful landscape and night photography while we get settled in. >>> NEW MAILING ADDRESS: PO Box 7734 Bend, Or 97708

Last Friday, June 26th 2015, the SCOTUS ruled that same sex marriage [or as I like to call it … Marriage] is legal in all 50 states; overruling any remaining state bans. I cried as my facebook, twitter, and instagram all blew up with the happy news and rainbows! My thoughts immediately turned to all the couples out there, in the US and worldwide, who had been waiting for 10, 20, …50+ years for this day. How best could I honor the moment, their love, and this long awaited justice? As a wedding photographer my focus is always on telling a love story, so that’s what I’m going to do…

>>> Love Wins Giveaway <<<

During the month of July I am hosting the #lovewinsgiveaway to honor three (3) LGBTQ couples with a portrait session. This could be an engagement session, a couple-in-love session, an anniversary session, or whatever feels most appropriate to celebrate your love and commitment to each other.

To Enter:

1. Post my #lovewinsgiveaway image on instagram, facebook, and/or twitter. Be sure to use the hashtag in your post.

10 couples will be randomly selected at 5:00pm (PST) on Friday July 17, 2015.

Those 10 couples will then tell me their love stories, via a questionnaire, and I will announce the 3 lucky winners at 5:00pm (PST) on Friday July 31st.

1. Session must be completed in the 2015 calendar year.

2. No cash value. Cannot be transferred to another party.

3. Giveaway covers session cost only. Winner is responsible for any additional costs or travel necessary outside the Willamette Valley, Ore.

4. First round recipients (10 couples) will be randomly selected, final recipients (3 couples) will be chosen by Amanda Photographic. All decisions are final and at the discretion of Amanda Photographic. Please do not attempt to undermine or bad-mouth recipients, especially in an attempt to get me to pick you instead. It just makes you look bad.

So excited to finally reveal my brand new look for Amanda Photographic!
I’ve wanted new branding… or really any consistent branding at all for what feels like forever. The problem was that I wanted too many things all at once, things that were mutually exclusive, or just felt dissatisfied with what I could come up with. Enter Brianna Bulski of Little Arrow Studio. Ahhhhh!!!

We had a wonderful phone conversation, followed by a date at Off the Waffle [heaven] to get the ball rolling. I knew that I was in good hands, not only because of her insane amount of experience, but also because she “got it”… she “got me”! I proofed and critiqued the first round of ideas, then BAM! Brianna nailed the rest of it in one amazing swoop. If you’re looking to revamp your branding she’s definitely your gal.

Reunion of Awesome II – Photos by Alex Huff

As you can clearly see 2014 was MUCH better than 2013 [the year of sadness].
With the new year upon us it’s time to reflect and plan for the next 12 – or in some cases 18 – months. Many people set new year’s resolutions that are, let’s be honest, unreasonable. I prefer resolutions like “wear lipstick more often” and “find a bra that ACTUALLY fits” …the struggle is real, gentlemen. It’s also important to set goals and resolutions for a business. Even more so these goals need to be S.M.A.R.T goals – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Results-focused, Time-bound – in order to be effective. I usually think of my resolutions after the new year has already started, which it isn’t necessary to start on January 1st but it does make it easier to keep track of, and I feel like I have to play catch-up. Well not this time! This time I planned ahead [GASP!] and I’m ready to tackle 2015 with all of my Aries fire!!!

For 2015 my personal goals are >>>

  • Stick with Crossfit and go to my box 3x/week.
  • Read 6 new (to me) books.
  • Keep an honest journal.
  • …and I’m still looking for that mythical well-fitting bra.

For 2015 my business goals are >>>

  • Blog at least 2x/week.
  • Stay on top of bookkeeping [ugh].
  • Photograph 15+ weddings.
  • Photograph 25+ high school seniors.
  • Travel to 3 new places.

Travel Photography Gila Mountain Cliff Dwellings, New Mexico

With the new year brings new adventures and a big one for my business will be spending more time in the Southwest. I’m not sure why it had not previously occurred to me that I could have not one, but TWO regions to photograph weddings in. …Especially when their “wedding seasons” are the exact opposite of each other. So for 2015 I have opened my booking to be readily available for weddings in Arizona and New Mexico [primarily] as well as Nevada, Utah, and Southwest Colorado. While my heart will always belong to the PNW, I now hold a special place for the desert and its beauty. I’m sure the inquiries will be slow at first, but hopefully not too slow. 😉

A few weeks ago I posted to social media that I had some BIG announcements… I also prefaced it with that I am not engaged or pregnant [sorry folks] to make the waiting a little easier to bare. Well it’s time to announce!
Firstly, I spent part of December working with Brianna Bulski of Little Arrow Studio to re-brand my business. The great reveal is coming shortly [Tuesday January 6th if you want to mark your calendars] and will be across all my print and web presence. Brianna and I have given a couple sneak peeks on instagram, and I’m SUPER excited for it to take and unify my visual media.
To start off my new year with some more fun I am participating as a sponsoring photographer for the Marry Me! [Jan 24 + 25] and Luxe Bridal Event [Feb 22] bridal shows in Portland. The gals over at Luxe Events have been very welcoming and I am eager to work with them again in a more official capacity. Being a sponsoring photographer isn’t just spending more to get press from them… no, I will not have a booth space [too salesy for me] and instead will be photographing sections of the shows. These events are always sooooo beautiful and my imagery will be used to promote the events for the following year [as well as myself, duh].
Marry Me and Luxe Bridal Event Portland Oregon Wedding Photography
Lastly a really really exciting thing that is happening toward the end of 2015 is that I have been accepted as a photographer for TWO Big Fake Wedding events!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! The Big Fake Wedding [formerly The Not Wedding] is a national tour that is an interactive alternative to bridal shows. Instead of booth after booth of wedding vendors this is REAL “fake” wedding… actually it’s a vow renewal for a rockin’ established couple. The guests are engaged couples and their friends who then can watch curated wedding vendors IN ACTION, share in this couple’s celebration, and dance the night away! How cool is that!?!? The application process, as you might imagine, is quite lengthy, especially compared to regular bridal shows and …wow I’m just so thrilled to be working with this love-centric team! The Big Fake Wedding team also spend a good amount of time promoting strong marriages, not just fancy weddings, and that is what absolutely sealed the deal for me. I will be photographing a Big Fake Wedding at MonOrchid in Phoenix, AZ in September AND the Space Needle in Seattle, WA in October. I’m kinda freakin’ out here.

So there you have it my BIG announcements and goals for 2015. I can’t wait to get started on everything and have a great year working with so many new and wonderful people. Happy New Year!!

The Vue and Forks & Corks Catering | 2014 Open House

Have you been to Corvallis’ premiere wedding and event venue?

Well at the end of January the community had a chance to go up to the 5th and 6th floors of the Elements Building in Downtown Corvallis to see this contemporary space, and it couldn’t have happened on a better night. Corvallis was in the middle of a “Spring Tease” with warm temps and blue skies gracing the Willamette Valley giving attendees a more realistic idea of what the space would be like for spring, summer, and fall weddings. The Vue has had some changes of its own recently. Kate Lynch, owner and director of possibilities at Forks & Corks Catering, is now managing the space and bringing her much sought after skills to The Vue. Celebration Florals joined the festivities with arrangements throughout.

I started my day with Kate at her Forks & Corks Catering location on 9th street. Her staff had prepared most of food the day before and was starting to bring everything together into beautiful and creative displays. I have always enjoyed food photography and showing the work that goes into creating a stunning dish or spread, so needless to say I love working with Kate any chance I get. We moved over the The Vue where Carol and Peggy {Celebration Florals} were busily arranging their bouquets and table pieces. I’ve seen their work at several weddings and they have never ceased to impress me. Guests began to arrive at about 5:00pm which was perfect for taking in the signature element of The Vue – THE VIEW!!! It was a cloudless sky so the sunset wasn’t the most colorful and dramatic, but it was breath-taking all the same with a classic silhouette of the Coast Range and Mary’s Peak. DJ Heath Honeycutt kept the atmosphere fun and light with dance music, while Kate’s staff impressed everyone with their service. Once it was dark The Vue was able to show off some its own features that make it a MUST for a modern styled event.

You can view everyone’s webpages with the links above or there facebooks here, here, and here.

Exciting new things happening in 2014… sneak peek!

As many of you know I opened a studio space earlier this year. …well 2014 is around the corner and I’m ready for action!

I will be hosting regular classes & workshops in the studio and on-location throughout the year. Small groups dedicated to a variety of photography topics as well as one-on-one adventures. If there is a particular topic you’d like to learn more about please drop it in the comments section and I’ll work on getting it set up. 🙂

Over 2012/2013 I super simplified my pricing and “packages” for all of my sessions and weddings. This was mostly so I could focus more on my photography/clients and less on keeping track of who paid for what and what it included blah blah blah. Now that I have the business end under better control I’ve decided to add a couple packages to my line-up. In the same spirit as my 2012/2013 decisions these are still meant to help us all focus on creating memories and make the whole process easier.

Amanda Photographic Studio | Where is it? Can I rent it too?

Over the last few months of cleaning, repairing, and painting the new studio space I’ve had several people come up for a visit… then I had my open house at the end of August. At each and every one of these encounters I was asked the same two questions – along with many others:

“I’m wandering around the Book Bin… Where are you?”
“Soooooooooo, are you going to rent this out to other photographers too?”

I’ll answer the second question first: Yes! Not just photographers either. Anyone can rent this space at an hourly or daily rate.

Weekdays: $25/hr or $75/day – One hour minimum. Times will be rounded to the next half-hour.

Weekends: $35/hr or $150/day – One hour minimum. Times will be rounded to the next half-hour.

This creative space is wonderful for group/client meetings, script readings/rehearsals, videography, photography, and more! Everything you see in the photos below is at your disposal including two {2} studio strobes, chairs/stools, and table. You are welcome to bring your lights, props, funky backdrops, and presentations to this space. The white ‘infinity wall’ space is approx 280 sq ft while the medium gray wall offers a 15′ (w) x 14′ (h)  backdrop; while you can back-up 20′ from the wall the effective shoot space is approx 150 sq ft. With the openness of the room really anything is possible!
In the picture below you see a big blank light grey wall… This is a work in progress of a display wall. Here you will see a wealth of prints in different sizes and media to help you visualize your new portraits and photography in your home. In the picture below you’ll notice that there is some storage happening behind the facade wall. That rockin 6’x20′ space is going to be the office area come November – That’s phase 3 of my evil … I mean wonderful plan. I would love to have an office-mate that is not a photographer. Sorry photog friends. Professions that I think would make good office-mates: Event Coordinator, Videographer, Graphic Designer, or really any computer based profession.

Now you’re saying, “Wow! That’s awesome, but how do I get there?” or “Yay Amanda! I want to come visit you in your studio!” Let’s go on a picture tour of how to get to my shmancy new place…

1. Oh look! You’re on 4th street in Downtown Corvallis between Madison and Jefferson Ave. Use the door south of the Book Bin entrance that is sporting signage for the Gluten Free RN, Darkside Cinema, and Suite 210.

2. Up the stairs you go! You can also take the elevator to the 2nd floor.

3. If you take the elevator you’ll first see the Darkside entrance and their posters. Check them out. 🙂 Then walk to your left until you reach the yellow hallway. If you took the stairs {good job btw} then take just a few steps to your left into the yellow hallway.

4. Walk to the end of the yellow-ish hallway. {p.s. re-painting and hanging photos in the hallway is phase 4 of my evil-wonderful plan} You’ll see my door on your right.

5. You’re HERE!

When visiting me please use inside voices in the hallway… movie goers don’t want to hear about how you think you might be lost. Also please do not ring the doorbell for Suite 210. This is not my room. They are very nice folks and I’d like to keep it that way.  🙂

If you missed my posts about the process of claiming this space you can read about it here, here, and here. You can also check out my Instagram.

Behind the Scenes at Amanda Photographic pt. 2.5

Not much more to say …we painted. We painted all day long.

Even though I can already feel my arms, shoulders, and stomach muscles tightening up (and not in the good way) I’m excited to get back to work tomorrow for what will hopefully be the last ceiling day. Why is it taking so long you ask? Because we’re painting a BLACK 15 foot ceiling that is adorned with exposed fixtures and piping.  This makes for slow going… but when it’s finished it will be a beautifully reflective off-white (slightly gray) 15 foot ceiling that is adorned with exposed fixtures and piping.

Here’s some pics from the day. 🙂
